Why and how to switch to lithium batteries in your motorhome

Motorhomes are generally fitted with gel batteries for power supply during stops, to avoid constant use of the engine. These standard 12-volt batteries, with amperage ranging from 50 Ah to over 200 Ah, can be advantageously replaced by lithium batteries.

To make the right choice, two criteria are essential: voltage and amperage.

  • The voltage (in volts) must remain identical to that of your vehicle for compatibility reasons.
  • Amperage (in Ah) determines the autonomy of your battery. The higher the amperage, the greater the autonomy. This is the criterion to be adjusted according to your needs.

Advantages of lithium batteries for motor homes

Replacing a standard battery with a lithium battery offers many benefits.

    • Reduced weight and size: a lithium battery can weigh up to four times less than a lead-acid battery, saving dozens of kilos and fuel consumption. They are also more compact for equivalent power, freeing up space in the vehicle.
    • Faster recharging: A lithium battery recharges in less than 4 hours, compared with an average of 8 hours for a gel battery. You gain in flexibility and travel time.
    • Extended service life: The service life of a lithium battery can exceed 15 years, far longer than the few years of a conventional battery. The initial investment, though higher, quickly pays for itself.

Important points when replacing your battery

It’s crucial to entrust the replacement of your battery to a competent professional. Simply replacing a gel battery with a lithium battery may not be compatible with your motorhome’s existing equipment.

Lithium batteries (such as LiFePO4, or LFP) have a different charging and discharging behavior to lead-acid batteries. A professional will be able to advise you and set up your new battery so that it’s perfectly suited to your vehicle.
